Sinopse

Vardis Fisher’s Odyssey of a Hero opens in the aftermath of World War I, when Private John Benton returns to his Idaho hometown to a thunderous celebration that quickly curdles into suspicion and rejection. The novel traces the inner life of a young man who enlisted not out of patriotism but from a desperate need to prove his worth, only to find that the truths he brought back from the trenches—that war is murder, that the enemy were men like himself—are unwelcome in a community hungry for myth. Fisher’s prose is unflinching, capturing both the hollow bombast of civic ritual and the quiet, corrosive loneliness of a veteran who no longer fits the story his neighbors insist on telling. Published in 1937, the book stands as a sharp counterpoint to the heroic war narratives of its era, anticipating the disillusionment that would define later American literature about combat. Fisher, a writer of the American West known for his psychological depth, here fuses regional realism with a universal meditation on memory, masculinity, and the cost of honesty. The novel’s exploration of how communities punish those who refuse to perform their assigned roles remains startlingly relevant, speaking to any age that prefers comfortable fables to uncomfortable truths. For readers today, it offers a bracing reminder that the soldier’s homecoming is never simple, and that the greatest battles often begin after the guns fall silent.
